Serge A. Shapiro received his Diploma in Applied Geophysics from Lomonosov Moscow State University (1982). From 1982 to 1991 he was a geophysicist at the Moscow Research Institute of Geosystems, where in 1987 he received his PhD degree. The main subject of his research was seismic attenuation and scattering. From 1991-1997 he continued his research at the Geophysical Institute of Karlsruhe University in Germany, where in 1995, he received his Habilitation for a thesis on stratigraphic filtering of seismic waves in thinly layered media. From 1997 to 1999, he was a Professor of Applied Geophysics at the Geological School of the Institute Polytechnique in Nancy, France. Since February 1999, he has been a full Professor of Geophysics at the Freie Universität Berlin and, since 2004 - Director of the PHASE (PHysics and Application of Seismic Emission) university consortium. His research interests include seismogenic processes, wave phenomena, and seismic exploration. For his works in microseismic monitoring and rock physics he received the Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal (2013) of the SEG. Serge is an author of many research publications and of 3 scientific monographs.

Productions and injections of fluids in rocks can induce significant earthquakes. Induced seismicity is observed by hydraulic fracturing of shale and stimulation of enhanced geothermal systems. Earthquakes can be caused by long-term developments of oil and gas fields. Understanding and monitoring of fluid-induced seismicity is necessary for controlling its seismic risk. The talk provides an overview of physical and geomechanical fundamentals of the seismic hazard, of approaches to its control and of various relevant case studies.
